As DHMM churches across the globe are excitedly ushered into a Season of Withdrawal, entailing prayer and fasting, our attentions turn to the prolific author Bishop Dag Heward-Mills’ book ‘Everything By Prayer, Nothing Without Prayer’.
In Chapter 12, we learn all about ‘How to Pray With Fasting.’ This chapter is a real game-changer since Jesus taught in Matthew 17:21 that “this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting”, showing us that, there are some problems that are only solved with prayer and fasting.
This chapter also teaches from Matthew 6:16, which quotes the words of Jesus: “when ye fast” and not if ye fast. Fasting will always be a part of christianity. Fasting is not an optional activity reserved only for ‘zealots’ or for those who have been in the faith for a long time. Every Christian, in following the teaching and example of Christ, is expected to fast. When coupled with prayer, fasting can cause you to take leaps in your ministry, spiritual life and walk with Christ.
We also learn that fasting is an activity that must be undertaken often, as stated in 2 Corinthians 11:26-27. Here, Apostle Paul distinguishes fasting from just being hungry and thirsty. Any misconceptions about fasting as just being starving or a key to “quick weight loss” are firmly dispelled by this intriguing read. Bishop Dag reiterates that “fasting is a spiritual exercise in which you seek God as you deny yourself food and pleasure.” We eagerly and expectantly look forward to seeing how God will move in our lives during this blessed season of prayer and fasting.
