For many great men, there are those others not very visible but VERY influential in the back stages of their lives – holding up their hands in the secret place, encouraging, loving and cheering them on! Such was this precious life.
Many years ago, a beautiful Swiss lady fell in love and got married to a charming Ghanaian lawyer. That union birthed the outstanding Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, whose life and ministry has touched so many lives the world over.
His story however, cannot be told without the mention of his amazing mother, Mrs. Elisabeth Heward-Mills.
She nurtured him for about 61 of the 85 years she was blessed with here on this earth. She played her role excellently until God called her home this year.
Funeral services were held in her honor in Switzerland, her motherland, and also in Ghana where she lived for the past 61 years.
All services were colored with beautiful memories and tributes from her family, friends and loved ones. They were also attended by many important dignitaries around the world.
The Honor Service in Ghana was blessed with the presence of the Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams who delivered a stirring and reflective sermon as well: the impactful roles mothers play in the destinies of their children. In this wise, Mrs. Elizabeth Heward-Mills joined the ranks of Mary the mother of Jesus, Jochebed the mother of Moses and Hannah the mother of the Prophet Samuel.
She did not only mother Bishop Dag and his siblings, but also many others she came into contact with, prominent among whom is her daughter in law, Episcopal Sister Adelaide Heward-Mills. She nurtured and poured herself into her grandchildren and was blessed to see even her great-grandchildren.
We cannot thank God enough for the precious gift of her life!
“Precious (important and no light matter) in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints (His loving ones).”
Psalm 116:15 AMPC
She hath done what she could!
